Josianne Robb is a British quilt artist based in Hong Kong and the creative force behind Indigo Shima.

With over two decades of quilting experience, she describes herself as a modern traditional maker: blending the lineage of classic quilt design with contemporary reinterpretation and favouring intuition over rigid rules. Her quilts draw on sewing traditions from different cultures, reminding us that we are more alike than different.

Josianne’s practice is rooted in resourcefulness and sustainability, combining repurposed cloth with new fabrics and exploring waste-reducing piecing techniques. She also specialises in memory quilts, transforming garments from loved ones (whether living or departed) into new pieces that are not only meaningful but also beautiful and practical. By carefully blending these fabrics with contemporary textiles, she creates work that honours memory while celebrating life.

Each quilt is both an object and a process: a meditation in slowness, repetition, and care. Hand quilting, her preferred method, becomes a mindful act of attention, an embodied reminder of resilience and presence.

Her designs are visual metaphors, symbolising self-care, empowerment, and joy. They invite viewers into a dialogue about how craft can hold both tradition and transformation.

Founded in 2020, Indigo Shima grew from a long-held dream and a conviction that beauty, mindfulness, and courage are best sewn into the fabric of everyday life.

Today, her work continues to explore how making with our hands can re-align us with strength, delight, and clarity… qualities needed as much in life as in art.
